This piece was written to give two individuals, using limited instrumentation, the opportunity to truly create one unified performance. The title, In Tandem, comes simply from my desire to force the two players to work in close quarters and seamlessly share notes or rhythmic ideas that must sound as played by one individual. The instrumentation calls for one low-A (4.3 octave) marimba, two sets of bongos, small bass drum, hi-hat, and splash cymbal. This work was commissioned by the Orkota Duo – Bob Brudvig (Oregon State University) and Darin Wadley (University of South Dakota) – and premiered in April 2008.
In the same vein as multi duets by Stephen Whibley and David Hollinden…”In Tandem” delivers a solid punch for any undergraduate recital. – Marcus D. Reddick
