An outstanding teaching piece for the young mallet student, In a Heartbeat centers on the low A of the bass clef with a repetitive pattern that resembles a heart beating in 12/8. Using a grand staff, but with a focus in the bass clef, the composition is primarily stepwise and very useful for promoting comfort in switching between clefs. With lots of dynamic contrast and essential accents, the piece is exciting, rewarding, and pedagogically effective. This work is fairly short and very accessible and enjoyable for young percussionists.

Young students will surely find this to be a cool piece and will be motivated to practice it. – Tom Morgan
